You should change your password periodically to ensure your privacy. Make sure that you are the only person who knows your password. Ownmail does not allow individuals to share accounts. If you think that your account has been comprised ("hacked" or "broken into"), contact services@ownmail.co.in immediately.

To Change Your Password

  1. On the top horizontal menu bar, click Options; click Password.
  2. Type your current password in the "Enter Old Password" field.
  3. Type your new password in the "Enter New Password" field.
  4. Re-type your new password in the "Confirm Password" field.
  5. Click OK to change your password. Or
    Click Cancel to return to the Options page without saving any changes.
  6. You may Set/Change your Secret Question then, which will aid you retrieve your password in case you forget it.
NOTE: If you forget your password, you can use the automatic password retrieval system, located on the Sign In Page by clicking on Forgot your Password? Click here link.

How to Choose Your Password

  1. Your password must be at least 5 characters long.
  2. Your password is also case sensitive, so be aware of any letters you capitalize.
  3. Do not use dictionary words from any language.
  4. Do not use proper names, such as the name of your pet, best friend, or significant other.
  5. Do not use personal information that a person could easily figure out.
    For example, if your favorite movie is Kuch Nahi Hota Hai, don't use "Shahrukh" as a password.
  6. Use a combination of letters and numbers.
    For example, "amm4wer"
  7. Use something that you can remember, but is difficult to figure out.
    For example, "SiuhitS" (An abbreviation for "Star is up high in the Sky")

To Ensure Your Privacy

An Ownmail employee will never ask you for your password, either over the phone or by e-mail. Ownmail only requires your password when you sign into your account and even then, your password is not displayed. If you encounter a message that asks for your password, please forward it to services@ownmail.co.in immediately. Do not respond to the inquiry.

It is important that you do not share your password(s) or Secret Question and Answer with anyone, even someone claiming to work for Ownmail.

Remember to change your password regularly as a security measure.

To set a Secret Question

  1. On the top horizontal menu bar, click Options; click Secret Question.
  2. In the "Secret Question" field, enter one question to which only you know the answer. Ownmail will not use this information for anything other than password retrieval purposes.
  3. In the "Secret Answer" field, type the answer to the question that you chose in step above.
  4. Click Submit to change your Secret Question and Answer. Or
    Click Cancel to return to the Options page without saving any changes.
NOTE: Make sure you have specified a valid Alternate email address in your Options/Personal/Alternate email address field and you know the password for that Email address, as this email address will be used to email your password to in case you forget your password and choose automatic password retrieval system, as otherwise you may not be able to retrieve your password.

Why you should set Secret Question?

  1. Secret question is the only automatic way to retrieve your password if you forget it.
  2. The other way is to contact your domain administrator and ask him to change your password. But this process may take time and you will not be able to access your account in this period.
  3. Your password will immediately be mailed to Email Address specified in your Options/Personal/Alternate email address field, once you answer the Secret Question correctly.
NOTE: Make sure you have specified a valid Alternate email address in your Options/Personal/Alternate email address field and you know the password for that Email address, as this email address will be used to email your password to in case you forget your password and choose automatic password retrieval system, as otherwise you may not be able to retrieve your password.

What to do if you forget your Password?

Automatic Password Retrieval

NOTE: For Automatic Password Retrieval System to work you must have set a Secret Question.

NOTE: Also make sure you have specified a valid Alternate email address in your Options/Personal/Alternate email address field and you know the password for that Email account, as this email address will be used to email your password to in case you forget your password and choose automatic password retrieval system, as otherwise you may not be able to retrieve your password.
  1. On the Login page of your domain(where you reach by typing mail.yourdomainname.extension), click Forgot your password? Click here link.
  2. You will be taken to the page where you will be asked for your Login name for the domain. Fill in your Login name and Click Submit.
  3. You will be prompted to answer a Secret Question that you had set. Fill in the answer(Secret Answer) that you had set along with the Secret Question and click Submit. Your password will be immediately Emailed to your Alternate email address after verification of the answer.

Contact your Domain Administrator

NOTE: If you had set your Secret Question; you may rather try the Automatic Password Retrieval system.

Since the domain administrator (admin@yourdomainname.extension) has rights to change your password, you may contact him/her and ask to change your password and inform you the changed password.

NOTE: The administrator should change the password only after he/she is confirmed of identity of the person asking to change his/her password.

NOTE: The administrator should take special care not to forget 'admin' password or atleast set a Secret Question, as there is no other means of retriving the forgotten password.
